WHY REPAINT A BUS?
Bus repainting is difficult, involving the coating of different body materials and previous paints. The choice of a material should be based on corrosion protection, ease of cleaning and coating life. In the wake of enamels, epoxies, acrylics and lacquers, the author advocates the use of urethanes, ranging between modified alkyds and polyesters. Polyester urethane is marked by long life, gloss retention and resistance to scratching and graffiti. Acrylic urethanes are less abrasion resistant but do dry quickly, an advantage in paint shops. Modified urethanes--acrylic alkyds and acrylic lacquers--have the gloss retention and mar resistance of urethane while being relatively fast setting. Aircraft grade polyester urethanes are the best choice with pure acrylic urethanes a close second. While slightly more expensive than traditional coatings, service life should be factored into the justification.
