HONOLULU'S "THEBUS"--TRANSIT PARADISE OF THE PACIFIC

Honolulu's transit system is marked by relatively high loadings throughout the day and evening with total ridership exceeding 80 million annually and per capita ridership about 105. MTL, Inc., is a private not-for-profit service and management agency which operates the 450-bus fleet for the City and County of Honolulu. "TheBus" is operated in two divisions and employs over 1200. Since public ownership replaced the private operator in 1971, service has grown from 11 to 53 routes with service now available to about 95 percent of Oahu island residents. There is strong civic support for public transit and a political consensus that fares should be kept low. Operations, maintenance and management functions are described. In the longer range Honolulu is committed to some form of higher capacity rail transit for the basic urban corridor of Oahu.
