BUFFALO OPENS ITS LRRT
The Buffalo Light Rail Rapid Transit, scheduled for May opening, was developed as a means of socioeconomic awakening for a badly depressed metropolitan area. After early rejections of full rapid transit by voters, the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority won funding for a light-rail transit concept operating on a 1.2-mile downtown transit mall then in 5.2 miles of subway north of the business district. The construction procedures and plans for operation are described. The 27 cars were built in Japan. Provision was made in design for line extensions with a route to the Towanda area as the most likely prospect.
