PLANNING THE DEVELOPMENT OF URBAN PUBLIC PASSENGER TRANSPORT AND THE TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR NEW TYPES OF TRAM CARS IN THE USSR
Despite expanding automobile ownership in the Soviet Union, public transit is to remain the basic mode for movement of people in cities. A new standard light rail vehicle has evolved, calling for a 2- or 3-section articulated car with provision for multiple-unit operation. Specifications are given for propulsion; pneumatic, rheostatic and regenerative braking; suspension, couplers, controls, carbody design and other features. The requirements remain flexible in the light of possible technical advancements and changing city planning demands.
