THE SNCF ORDERS A SERIES OF DUAL CURRENT LOCOMOTIVES WITH SELF-DRIVEN SYNCHRONOUS MOTORS
The experiments on the BB 10004 with a set of self-driven synchronous traction motors have proved the value of this system for high-power locomotives. With the level of performance obtained, a BB dual-current locomotive (1.5 kV DC-25 kV AC) fitted with this equipment can in fact be said to be universal as regards SNCF traction requirements. The construction of two pre-production units, which will be ready for service early in 1985 by making use of the mechanical parts or existing locomotives (BB 22200), will be followed by the purchase of 44 other units which will be fitted with the same power equipment in a body of new design. The contract for the manufacture of these locomotives has been awarded to the firms of Alsthom-Atlantique and MTE. They will be of the BB 26000 type, weigh 90 metric tons and give a continuous output of 5.600 kW. They will be capable of hauling a 750 t passenger train at 200 km/h up a 2.5%o gradient or freight trains at 80 km/h. The latest technical developments will be incorporated in the locomotives, particularly as regards the electronic equipment, and they will have driving cabs designed in accordance with ergonomic principles.
