S-BAHN PROJECTS PROLIFERATE

The article reviews the progress of new U-bahn and S-bahn projects in Austria and Switzerland. Two new U-bahn lines are under construction in Vienna and further S-bahn construction is taking place in Vienna, Linz, Innsbruck and Voralberg. Swiss railways largest project is the 370km long Zurich s-bahn network, based on existing lines. When completed, the line is expected to carry 60 million passengers per year with double-deck trains operating on one or two of the busiest lines. Improvements to the system in Vienna have been limited by one section of one line being designated a protected monument. No significant changes can be made to the appearance of structures which have been in use since 1898. Some new lines and extensions to existing lines are being built in Vienna. The project also involves constructing a 2.2km long underground link between two existing light rail lines. A new station is also being built to provide a cross-platform interchange between two lines replacing the existing out-of-date station. A new fare structure, integrating provincial transport with that of Vienna, has nearly doubled the sale of season tickets. Austrian schemes are proposed by the province who must also provide 20 per cent of the funds needed. (TRRL)
