SOUTH YORKSHIRE: PROGRESS HAVING IN THE BALANCE
The author traces the history of the South Yorkshire Passenger Executive, set up in 1974, and its involvement with rail services. A co-ordinated service between bus and rail has been established to support lines from Sheffield to Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham, providing links to West Yorkshire, greater Manchester and the inter-city network. Rail fares have been held to the 1977 level; rail being slightly more expensive that bus. Usage has shown a steady increase over the last few years, but continued development is threatened by the return of control to South Yorkshire county council. This council, having recently overspent, will be subjected to ratecapping. Fares are therefore likely to rise considerably to keep expenditure within the budget. Further complications are anticipated with the possibility of stage carriage bus operation on parallel routes by any private operator being allowed in the government's White Paper, "buses". It would also probably result in the withdrawal of local council subsidies under Section 20 of the 1968 Transport Act as it was very unlikely that trains running in parallel with its own buses would be sponsored.
