STRESS ANALYSIS ON RUNNING GEAR PARTS--A CONTRIBUTION TO SAFETY AND ECONOMY IN RAILWAY OPERATION

Following introductory remarks on the measurement and evaluation of stresses in parts, especially in cases of vibration, the author describes the methods of stress analysis presently used in static and dynamic rig testing within the framework of operational reliability at the DB's test station in Minden. These are based on the rules given in the DB publication DS 952 and on the ORE report B 12/RP 17, but the method described here goes beyond the procedure stated. An innovation is the use of the Markov matrix for classifying the stress-time functions and the statistical extrapolation for determining the assessment values for estimating the life expectancy. There is a wish to improve the described method in respect of the statistical evaluation and to supplement it with calculations of life expectancy, in which the Markov matrix could be helpful. The DB sees opportunities here for research activity at suitable university institutes.
