FACTORS DETERMINING PUBLIC TRANSPORT TRAVEL DEMAND IN AMSTERDAM

VRAAGBEPALENDE FACTOREN IN HET AMSTERDAMSE OPENBAAR VERVOER

In Amsterdam a study has been carried out on possible relations between urban development and public transport travel demand. This was done for the period 1973-1981/1982. Demographic factors have only a limited influence. The availability of frequent tram and bus services is more important. Higher fares, especially for season ticket holders, and the introduction of a new pay-as-you-ride ticket (the so-called strippenkaart) caused considerable ticket substitution with negative financial effects. The situation is aggravated by the deteriorating economy which makes passengers more cost-conscious. With more fare increases to come and far from optimistic expectations on economic growth there is an unpromising prospect for the future. (TRRL)
