ACCESS TO PUBLIC TRANSPORT

This article reviews the policy of Strathclyde Regional Council as regards the transport of disabled passengers and describes an experimental mock up on a double deck Atlantean bus: the bus was fitted with a centre nearside door and two retractable wheelchair ramps located under the chassis. Investigations were also carried out into "building in" Provision for the disabled from new. The Ailsa city bus produced by Volvo was modified to incorporate a double step lift with folding frame. The bus can accommodate 6 wheelchairs with floor mounted restraints and harnesses. For longer journeys the L70000 MCW Metroliner coach can accommodate 12 wheelchairs and 24 passengers. Two new Metroliners ensure scheduled services to and from the centre of Glasgow Pollock and Paisley. The new coaches are fed by 11-seater minibuses on call to pick up disabled passengers from their homes and shuttle to and from Metroliner bus stops. Surveys are being conducted to assess patronage of the new services. (TRRL)
