DECREASING SHARE OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN SHOPPING TRAVEL IN NIJMEGEN

DALEND AANDEEL VAN HET OPENBAAR VERVOER IN HET WOON-WINKELVERKEER TE NIJMEGEN

The Netherlands governmental fare plan envisaged increases in public transport fares of 10 per cent per annum in order to cut losses to an acceptable level. On the introduction of the fare plan the Minister of Transport estimated that there would be 5 per cent less patronage of urban public transport travel. Government officials expected a greater reduction, however. A study in Nijmegen shows that for the 20-39 years age group the share of public transport in shopping trips has decreased from 14 per cent in 1982 to 7 per cent in 1984. For the 40-59 year olds the percentage dropped from 28 to 19 per cent. The first group changed to using bicycles, the second took to various modes of travel. The effects of the 1984 fare increase and the introduction of smaller zones have not yet been investigated. (TRRL)
