COMPREHENSION OF ROAD SIGNS FOR PARKING REGULATIONS

UTMAERKNING AV PARKERINGSREGLER. TRAFIKANTENS FOERSTAAELSE AV SKYLTAR

Thirty experienced drivers participated in a laboratory test aimed at testing their comprehension of Swedish road signs for parking regulations. Twenty-one signs were colour photographed against realistic backgrounds and presented to the subjects in a laboratory test run on an "on-line" mini-computer. The subjects reported the time intervals during which they were allowed to stop and park, respectively. Yes-/no-reaction times were also measured to the question if parking was allowed a given weekday and time of the day. An average of about 30% of the signs were not comprehended. When feed-back had been given the errors were reduced to about 13%. The mean reaction time excluding response time was estimated to be about 2.6 seconds. It was longer for no-responses, increased substantially with the number of supplementary signs and to a less extent with the number of time intervals on the supplementary signs. No-parking signs furthermore led to longer reaction time than parking signs. (Author/TRRL)
