SYSTEMATIC TRENDS IN BICYCLE TRAFFIC CONCENTRATION OUTSIDE BUILT-UP AREAS

WETMATIGHEDEN IN DE INTENSITEITEN VAN HET FIETSVERKEER BUITEN DE BEBOUWDE KOM

From a study of literature, inaccuracies in traffic counts and daily flow patterns the author derives some systematic trends. It seems that weather conditions are the most important factor influencing bicycle intensities. Furthermore opening times of schools, the duration of daylight and the character of the cycle path (recreational or utilitarian) play a role. Bicycle traffic can quite accurately be measured by mechanical counts; mopeds and platoons cause problems. Comparisons between locations can be made using daily December averages. Models can be used for estimating the yearly day average by type of day. Weekday peaks on utilitarian cycle paths amount to 10-12 per cent of the daily flow. Zipf's law can be used for calculating the busiest hours in sequential order. (TRRL)
