USE OF CHEM-CRETE ON TEST ROADS

ANVENDELSE AF CHEM-CRETE PAA FORSOEGSSTRAEKNINGER

Laboratory tests confirm that chem-crete-concentrates (CCC) have an improving effect on the stability and bearing capacity of bituminous materials, as well as on the temperature susceptibility and cohesion of same. The improvement of stability and bearing capacity is most significant on sand asphalt, while it is relatively small on asphaltic concrete and the like. The improving properties of CCC depend on the quality (the metal ion concentration and composition) of the actual product and the quantity used. They will depend further on the chemical composition and physical properties of the bitumen used. Consequently it is of utmost importance that very careful preliminary investigations are carried out as a basis for the production formula. So far it appears that the preliminary investigations may cause interpretation difficulty with regard to the actual processing period, which again may cause difficulty during the production and construction. However, hardening of the bitumen can probably be delayed by a moderate consumption of CCC. In connection with the use of CCC as modifier for bitumen, untraditional bituminous base-and surface layers may be used. The use of single graded sand may be considered, and the thickness of base courses can be reduced. An eventual evaluation of the practical prospects of CCC will be carried out after a certain period of observation of the established test sections. (Author/TRRL)
