SEASONAL VARIATION IN PAVEMENT DEFLECTION MEASUREMENTS IN THE SYDNEY METROPOLITAN AREA
Monitor sites were established at various locations in the Sydney metropolitan area for the periodic measurement of Benkelman beam deflections. Pavements consisted essentially of asphaltic concrete over a crushed rock base. The roads were all classified roads and varied from heavily- trafficked arterial roads to lightly-trafficked roads. The average annual rainfall ranged from 800 to 1200 mm depending on the site. At all but one site the deflections were measured only in the outer wheelpath. Maximum deflections only were recorded. At three of the eight sites there were significant variations in deflections with time but there was no correlation with rainfall or evaporation evident from the data presented. The correlations were performed for maximum deflection plus standard deviation with either rainfall, evaporation, rainfall minus evaporation or rainfall divided by evaporation. The implications of the results for design of asphaltic concrete overlays are discussed as it is clear that there is no ready method to determine a factor to be applied to the results to take account of fluctuations in deflection with time. The authors suggest that further investigation is required and that in the meantime correction factors for seasonal variation should only be applied where initial testing has shown that they are appropriate.
