FACTORS IN ROAD DESIGN WHICH AFFECT CAR FUEL CONSUMPTION

Following recommendations of the Leitch Committee, the Department of Transport commissioned a study of traffic speeds and fuel consumption before and after the opening of the Godstone-to-Sevenoaks section of the M25 in November 1979. This paper outlines the collection of data in the A25/M25 before-and-after study, and the problems encountered in developing a satisfactory regression equation to relate fuel consumption to the various road and vehicle factors. From this regression equation suitable forms of prediction equation are derived, using different sets of predictive variables. The final part of the paper discusses the relative importance of including various factors in the prediction equations. Predictions are made of fuel consumption changes between a number of "before" and "after" situations, using the various forms of prediction equations, and the likely errors of predictions made using the simplest formulae are quantified.
