SALTO GRANDE DAM PROVIDES ENERGY, HIGHWAY LINK
The recently completed Salto Grande Dam, spanning the Uruguay River between Uruguay and Argentian, not only produces hydroelectric power for 19 million people, but provides a third highway link between the two nations of the River Plate. The other two bridges are the Paysandu-Colon and Fray Bento-Puerto Unzue spans. The rail networks of Uruguay and Argentina are now connected for the first time through the rail tracks crossing the Salto Grande Dam. The Salto Grande Dam benefits an area of 128,000 square kilometers in both countries, where the land is rich and suitable for livestock farming, the development of agriculture, and forestation. Two interconected hydroelectric power stations have a total installed power of 1.9 million kilowatts and an average annual energy production of 6.7 million kilowatts. (Author)
