THE IMPORTANCE OF ROADS IN THE FIGHT AGAINST POVERTY

The author suggests that we should look at the problem of development of backward areas not in terms of their industrialization, but as a wider process in which the people get more income through more employment. After all, not every village, nor even every town, can be industrialized, and people who do not live near an industrial establishment can not be doomed to perpetual poverty. It is when we shift our focus from industrialization to development that the role and contribution of the road transport system stands out as of paramount significance. There are many reasons for this. First of all, the building of roads provides a great deal of employment to the local population. Once the roads have been completed other benefits will follow. It is much more efficient for mobile clincis to visit backward areas for routine ailments. Experts in different fields, like sanitation and agriculture, can easily visit areas where road links have been established. In short, with good road communications, a process of improvement of the quality of life of the people will start, which is what development is all about.
