20 YEARS OF PROGRESS 1965-1985. APPALACHIAN REGIONAL COMMISSION
This publication reviews the accomplishments of the Appalachian Regional Commission during its first twenty years in the fields of transportation, education, health, child development, community building, housing, enterprise development, energy, natural resources, and environment. Especially noteworthy in the field of transportation is the Appalachian Development Highway System designed to supplement the Interstate System which had largely bypassed the region. The system's aims were to: relieve Appalachia's isolation, to attract new industry and commerce, and to give the area a framework for investments and improvements in health, education, housing and community development. The delivery of social services in Appalachia lagged behind that in the rest of the nation partly because poor roads helped make the delivery costly. So far, 1831 miles of the proposed 2471 mile system have been completed.
