ARKANSAS UTILITY SHIFTS ITS FLEET TO CNG
As a natural gas utility, the Arkansas Western Gas Co. can be expected to actively promote the use of natural gas as a plentiful and inexpensive energy source. But it also practices what it preaches. The utility, which services 74,000 metered customers in eleven (11) northwestern Arkansas counties, is converting its fleet of service trucks and autos from gasoline to compressed natural gas (CNG), making it a NGV (natural gas vehicle) Fleet. Economic factors are the prime reasons for the conversion--but not the only ones. When all vehicles are running on CNG, which should occur by 1987, the utility expects to reduce its fuel costs by almost half. In addition to fuel costs, the company has found that its vehicles run as well or better on CNG and so maintenance costs are also being reduced. And, CNG's properties make it safer to use in vehicles. (Author)
