FINAL REPORT COMES IN ON RALLY FOR NGVS'
The Rally for Fuel Savings had its final show of the tour in the parking lot outside of the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California, on November 5th, wrapping up one of the most visible, highly successful public relations campaigns ever sponsored by the gas utility industry. The Rally covered almost 7,500 miles in its cross country journey. About 5,000 people were on had at the 18 Rally stops to view the display vehicles, take test drives, and learn from the utilities more about the virtues of natural gas as a vehicle fuel and about the composite reinforced aluminium cylinder. Stories about the Rally caravan appeared in literrally hundreds of newspapers (over 400), on television in each stop, and on radio, achieving the high level of exposure hoped for at the beginning of the Rally. Though NGV sales and conversions take time--there has been a general lack of consumer awareness about the concept--it's clear that the Rally for Fuel Savings accomplished its mission. Interest among the gas industry also has increased. In most cases, the presence of the Rally spawned great enthusiasm among utility personnel, not all of whom have been involved in NGV technology. Most importantly, a number of utility vice presidents and CEOs had their first opportunity to become involved first hand with NGVs, and this should help break down some of the intra-industry barriers to commercializing NGVs.
