FUNDAMENTAL EVALUATION OF FUEL-EFFICIENT ENGINE OILS
Fundamental laboratory tests on fuel-efficient engine oils were run to study how to select base oils and friction modifiers. Reliability of those oils was evaluated on the engine through tests on fuel economy, valve train wear, detergency, etc. The 7.5W-30 (the viscosity of 18 poise or lower in the range of SAE viscosity grade 10 W is rated as 7.5 W in Japan; 7.5W-30 corresponds to 10W-30 in SAE J300 standards) having suitable base oils and blended with some friction modifier exhibited 3% fuel saving in the Japanese 10-mode fuel economy test as compared with a 10W-40 oil containing no friction modifier. It was also observed that possible negative effects of a viscosity-reduced and friction-modified oil, such as increase in wear, corrosion and oil consumption, decreased detergency, and catalyst deterioration by P poisoning, can be eliminated by oil formulation (selection of base oils and friction modifiers).
