A REVIEW OF ROUNDABOUT STUDIES AND NOTE ON THE FLOW LEVELS OF TRAFFIC ENTERING A MINI-ROUNDABOUT

A comprehensive review is given of the literature on mini-roundabouts and on conventional roundabouts both with and without priority rules. Two methods for deriving the capacity of an uncontrolled junction, proposed by Tanner and by Wohl and Martin, are studied using data collected at a mini-roundabout to determine whether the pattern of flows entering the roundabout can be adequately represented knowing the physical layout and the circulating flows. Tanner's method gives a good description of the maximum flows which can enter the roundabout with any given level of flow on the roundabout. The simpler Wohl and Martin's method is found to give some large errors although in a given situation it is possible to reduce these. It is found that, in general, the incorporation of mini- roundabouts in existing procedures for determining optimum signal settings in an area would require the supply of a considerable amount of detailed information which could not be deduced in the case of a proposed mini-roundabout. /Author/
