WHEEL LOAD SURVEYS FOR COUNTY AND URBAN PAVEMENTS
This report presents the results of (1) a wheel load and commodity survey on county roads, and (2) pavement loading for urban streets in New Zealand. To establish standards for design of roads carrying is less than 1000 vehicles/day, wheel load and commodity surveys were conducted on roads in typical dairy, sheep horticultural and timber milling areas. Information was obtained for G roads and 1513 heavy vehicles. Tables show the loading characteristics of vehicles carrying a range of commodities. The conclusions from the survey are listed and they indicate that wide variation in traffic loading applies to country roads. The second project required (1) the significant commodities for urban streets and the type of vehicle which carried these commodities and (2) the equivalent design axle loading (EDA)/vehicle for significant commodities. Surveys were conducted in Auckland and Dunedin and the results are presented and analysed under the headings:-percentage of heavy vehicles, vehicle loading and commodity counts. It was evident that weighing of vehicles was unnecessary or only of local value. An attempt to assess the contribution of public transport to pavement loading indicated that there was scope for optimising in terms of pavement wear/vehicle or/passenger carried. /TRRL/
