MAINTENANCE AID DIGEST

A survey was conducted to gather information, laws, and possible recommendations for laws, pertaining to abandoned unattended vehicles left within 30 feet of the travel lanes. The majority of states were found to provide for removal of unattended or abandoned vehicles under the authority of local law enforcement agencies with the highway departments having this authority only in emergency situations. The findings showed much greater variation in the legal definitions involved, and in the regulations regarding the levy of fines, towing fees, impoundment etc. Based on the data collected. Suggestions are offered to aid in the control of unattended and abandoned vehicles. A table is presented which summarizes the responses to the survey on unattended vehicles.
