TESTS ON PLATES UNDER BIAXIAL COMPRESSION
Modifications are described to a plate test rig, to apply biaxial compressive loads to rectangular plates. Particular attention was paid to defining boundary conditions and ensuring that loadings were correctly measured. Tests were performed on 6 mm thick high-strength structural steel plates, containing residual stresses and deliberate initial out-of-flatness. The plate strengths obtained are compared with previous small-scale tests, results of finite-element and finite-difference strength analyses, and present and proposed design rules. Small modifications are suggested to strength interaction curves. (Author/TRRL)
