THE TRANSPORT OF GOODS BY ROAD IN GREAT BRITAIN 1983

This report analyses the freight activity and vehicle kilometres done on public roads in the United Kingdom by goods vehicles greater than three and a half tonnes gross vehicle weight, and 1525 kgs unladen, registered in Great Britain. Freight activity is measured in terms of the product of the volume of goods lifted, and the distances over which they are transported. This latter measurement is the indicator which reflects economic activity within the road haulage industry. Prior to 1978 the estimates measure the freight activity and vehicle kilometres done on public roads in Great Britain, and not the United Kingdom. The estimates are derived from the continuing survey of road goods transport which, each week, collects journey details from a weekly sample of about 350 goods vehicles. (TRRL)
