THE INFLUENCE OF TRAFFIC ON MOTORWAY ACCIDENT RATES
The initial results are presented from a study undertaken to develop an accident prediction model for motorways. Summary tables show the relationship determined between injury accident rates and traffic flow. Further relationships between traffic flow and injury accident rates by severity and single and multiple vehicle accidents are also postulated. Future work will investigate the influence of highway features on motorway injury accidents. This will enable the model to predict injury accident rates for a motorway link, given a specified traffic flow and the geometric and highway features incorporated into the design of the road. (TRRL)
