Detecting Emerging Hazards in Commercial Aviation

In August 2022, a National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine committee released an assessment of the data and methods currently used by the commercial aviation industry and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to identify emerging safety hazards in commercial aviation. In this report, the first of a 10-year project requested by Congress, the committee found that the current data and analysis methods used in the aviation industry are invaluable for identifying and monitoring potential safety hazards in the immediate time frame. This article highlights: the primary program for detecting aviation safety hazards, the Commercial Aviation Safety Team (CAST); the Aviation Safety Information Analysis and Sharing (ASIAS) initiative; and the assessment of organizational safety culture. The next phase of the study will apply a “horizon scanning” method to identify future safety hazards that may arise.
