RIDESHARING PROGRAMS OF EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES

Ridesharing programs at educational facilities must serve various customers, including students, faculty, and staff. Providing ridesharing for students, the largest group of customers, is complicated by variations in their arrival and departure times, in the calendar intervals at which they attend classes, and by their need for especially inexpensive transportation. Solving pertinent problems, as well as fulfilling the needs of faculty and staff, depends on such things as the nature of the facility's locale--urban or rural; the availability of public transportation; and the availability of funds to begin a ridesharing program. This study descrbes various approaches that have been developed to staisfy the needs of thei broad-based ridership. They encompass four types of ridesharing activities: vanpools, carpools, shuttles, and cooperation with existing public transportation systems. Each of these activities is summarized and described. Successful ridesharing programs that make use of these activities at 10 educational facilities around the country are profiled. They are the College of Southern Idaho, Twin Falls; Kirkwood Community College, Cedar Rapids, IA; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge; Southeast Community College, Milford, NE; Syracuse University, SUNY College of Environment, Science, and Forestry, and State University of New York, Upstate Medical Center--all in Syracuse, NY; University of California at San Diego, La Jolla; University of Maryland, College Park; University of Texas at San Antonio; University of Washington, Seattle; and Wisconsin Indian Technical Institute, Rice Lake.
