UITP 46TH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS, BRUSSELS 1985. NO. 2: REGIONAL TRANSPORT IN THE YEAR 2000. TRENDS AND PERSPECTIVES
Regional public transit must exist for its passengers. This report examines the demand side during the past 15 years and predicts how markets might be developed in the next 15. Questionnaires were completed by 43 primarily European public transit agencies. Within Europe there are differences between countries so that the authors have confined themselves to identifying trends and perspectives which are seen significant. The predominant regional transit mode is the bus, but some operators have rail services, trolley buses, streetcars and light rail. It is concluded that (1) School travel is an important business segment; (2) Shopping travel will be maximized if major stores are in city centers rather than in suburbs; (3) Leisure travel is growing; (4) Elderly form an increasing proportion of total ridership; (5) Demand for public transit will change and adaptibility will be the key to public transit's survival; (6) Survey results show some optimism about operating environment, subsidies and fare trends, with reservations on the part of some agencies; (7) While most governments are placing increased responsibility on local government for public transit, Great Britain is questioning the viability of such regionalism; (8) Deregulation in Great Britain and the Netherlands would seem not to promise more regional transit services.
