FACTORS AFFECTING HISPANIC ACCESSIBILITY AND UTILIZATION OF PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This study investigates the under-utilization of public transportation by Hispanics compared to other minority groups and transportation forecasts. The study analyzed the extent and causes of the under-utilization. Among the relationships examined were physical barrier effects and socio-cultural effects. The study found that Hispanic transit dependency is increasing but that Hispanics do use transit less than would be expected. Hispanics have good access to centrally focused traditional public transit systems but this accessibility does not match their desired destinations. Hispanics make a greater use than other minorities of informal travel arrangements (i.e, friends, borrowing cars) to make trips rather than transit. Greater efforts to take into consideration Hispanic transit needs could improve ridership and improve Hispanic accessibility.
