1983 HIGHWAY TRAFFIC ACCIDENT REPORT

The Motor Vehicle Laws of state of Washington require that the standard accident report forms be submitted by the operator of any vehicle in an accident resulting in injury or in death of any person or damage to the property of any person to an apparent extent of three hundred dollars or more. The accident information in this report is extracted and summarized from tapes supplied to the Department of Transportation's Planning, Research and Public Transportation Division by the Washington State Patrol. These tapes contain the complete traffic collision data extracred from the Traffic Accident Report forms. The first part of the report contains tables showing accidents, population, travel and other relevant data for state highways. The second part of the report contains graphs and charts of driver and environmental factors involved in accidents for the year on our state highways. The third part of the report shows the accident experience within the described sections listed by milepost sequence. The highway system has been divided into sections of various lengths. The section limits are based primarily on traffic volume breaks and are located at junctions of state highways, major county roads, major city streets and interchange areas, as well as some jurisdictional boundaries. The section limits, therefore, are expected to remain relatively constant from year to year for comparison validity. Traffic volumes are based on data developed by the Travel Data unit.
