INTERACTIVE GRAPHICS AIDED DESIGN SYSTEM-GENERAL SYSTEM DESIGN

This third interim report documents the user interface concepts for the Interactive Graphics Roadway Design System (IGRDS) portion of the overall package of programs that make up the Interactive Graphics Aided Design System (IGADS). IGRDS provides designers with interactive graphics input/output capabilities for use with the Roadway Design System (RDS). RDS is an integrated system providing the user with calculation tools for most areas of highway design. IGRDS utilizes graphics terminals to allow the user to input data for processing with RDS in an interactive environment and to view the graphics results of the calculation immediately. This report gives the interrelationship of all of the programs that make up IGADS and the definition of interactive graphics computer systems used. The definition discusses response to the user as a measure of interactivity of computer systems and the difference between interactive systems and interactive graphics systems. The concepts that interactive graphics could provide in the process of designing a highway from location studies to construction of the facility are provided. They are the result of interviews with engineering users and include the priority the users placed upon the development of the various interactive graphics functions. (Author)
