EVALUATION OF WIDE EDGELINES ON TWO-LANE RURAL ROADS

This interim report presents the results of an evaluation of 4-in and 8-in wide edgelines on the lateral placement and speeds of vehicles on two-lane rural roads. Data were collected at twelve locations on sections of roadway covering 55.2 mi. Two methods of painting the 8-in width were also analyzed. It was concluded from analyses of variance of lateral placement, lateral placement variance, encroachments by cars and trucks, mean speed, and the speed variance that, overall, there were no statistically significant differences between the 4-in and 8-in wide edgelines. The mean lateral placement was significantly lower for the 8-in line. However, changes in lateral placement and speed were neither statistically nor practically significant. (Author)
