OPTIMIZATION METHODS FOR BUS SYSTEMS IN URBAN AREAS - A LITERATURE REVIEW (PRELIMINARY VERSION)

THIS IS A LITERATURE REVIEW PERFORMED AT THE BEGINNING OF A RESEARCH PROJECT CALLED OPTKOLT (COMPUTER-BASED OPTIMIZATION METHODS FOR ALLOCATION OF BUSES - IN TIME AND SPACE - FOR PUBLIC TRANSIT IN URBAN AREAS) AT LINKOEPING UNIVERSITY. THE LITERATURE CITED CONCERNS OPTIMIZATION PROBLEMS RELEVANT TO BUS SYSTEMS OPERATING IN URBAN AREAS. OF PRIMARY CONCERN ARE ALGORITHMS FOR DISPATCHING OF BUSES IN TIME AND SPACE TO MEET THE DEMAND, AND COMPUTER MODELS TO EVALUATE THESE ALGORITHMS. DIFFERENT BUS SYSTEMS ARE REVIEWED AND THE ALGORITHMS FOR THESE SYSTEMS ARE DISCUSSED. THE MOST DEMAND RESPONSIBLE SYSTEM IS CALLED DIAL-A-BUS, A DOOR-TO-DOOR PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SERVICE. A SLIGHTLY MORE RIGID SYSTEM IS THE SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE. ALSO THE FIXED SCHEDULE BUSES (CONVENTIONAL BUSES) ARE TREATED. THE EVALUATION OF A ALGORITHM CONSTRUCTED IS MADE BY USING COMPUTER MODELS DESCRIBING THE BUS SYSTEM AND THE URBAN AREA UNDER CONSIDERATION. THERE WILL BE AN INTERACTIVE PROCESS BETWEEN THE ALGORITHM WORK AND THE MODEL WORK. THUS, ALGORITHMS SUITABLE FOR USE IN A REAL WORLD ENVIRONMENT COULD BE CONSTRUCTED.
