FIRST REPORT FROM THE COMMITTEE ON WELSH AFFAIRS SESSION 1984-85. PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN WALES. TOGETHER WITH THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE COMMITTEE, THE MINUTES OF EVIDENCE AND APPENDICES

In July 1984, the Welsh office issued a consultation paper, "local choice in public transport". This first report is a reply to an invitation by the consultation paper for detailed comments on the suggested changes in the organisation of transport services in Wales. It considers the areas of (1) buses (co-ordination, cross-subsidy, competitive franchising, vehicle safety); (2) bus substitution (passenger preference for rail, inconsistencies in bus policy); (3) railways (enhanced role for county councils, local decision-making, local lines, closure procedures, investment and marketing in Wales' railways). Included in the report is a list of the memoranda submitted by the British Railways Board, the National Bus Company, the Welsh Counties Committee, Transport 2000 Ltd, and the Chartered Institute of Transport.
