BUS SAFETY STANDARDS 1: THE CURRENT STATUS AND REQUIREMENTS

Using statistical data, the author demonstrates that public service vehicles are involved in a proportionally greater number of accidents than other vehicles and that these accidents are far more severe than other accidents. The factors involved in the causation of accidents and injuries as related to public service vehicles are reviewed. Vehicle features that need revision are discussed. Several specific areas are identified for further research as a continuation of this project. It is proposed that the most effective approach to improving the bus accident situation is the setting of standards for the design and manufacture of buses. (TRRL)
