BUS SAFETY STANDARDS II: VEHICLE FEATURES

The first report on this project (see IRRD 281972) found that there was good cause for the investigation and improvement of bus safety. Several specific areas for further research were identified. The present report discusses in greater detail the vehicle features identified in the first report. These features include the structure of the vehicle, ergonomic factors, vehicle control functions, and others grouped together under the general title of safety measures. In addition, attention is also drawn to the transportation of people on goods vehicles. It is concluded that, apart from specific detail improvements as discussed in the report, a shift in the approach to the design and construction of buses is necessary, towards a concept of total design, with due consideration of the extremes of operating conditions, including accidents.
