COST EFFECTIVENESS OF BITUMEN ADDITIVES
THE REPORT DESCRIBES AN APPROACH TO ASCERTAIN THE COST EFFECTIVENESS OF VARIOUS PRICED BINDERS. THE AIM OF THE STUDY WAS TO DETERMINE THE APPROXIMATE ALLOWABLE BINDER OR MODIFIER COST FOR A LONGER-LASTING FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT AND THEREBY REDUCE OVERALL COSTS. THE APPROACH IS DESCRIBED BY WAY OF EXAMPLES, WHERE THE DESIRED RESULT IS A 20% COST REDUCTION, ASSUMING THAT A HIGH-QUALITY BINDER WOULD GIVE A FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT LIFE OF 12 YEARS, AS OPPOSED TO AN AVERAGE OF A 3 YEAR LIFE BEFORE AN OVERLAY IS THEORETICALLY NEEDED, USING ASPHALT BINDER. CALCULATIONS SHOW THAT FOR A COST SAVING OF 20% ALMOST ANY TYPE OF PLASTIC COULD BE A POSSIBLE BINDER MATERIAL FOR FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT IF USED IN LARGE QUANTITIES. ALSO, THIS COST EFFECTIVENESS SHOWS THAT IT MAY BE ECONOMICAL TO CONSIDER ASPHALT ADDITIVES TO THE EXTENT THAT THE ASPHALT IS ONLY THE CARRIER.
