TEST DEVICE AND TEST PROCEDURE TO ASSESS SIDE STRUCTURES-PHASE II FINAL REPORT. VOLUME I-SUMMARY REPORT
A deformable moving barrier (Side Impactor) was developed to evaluate passenger vehicle side structures in front-to-side collisions. Force-deflection properties were determined for production vehicles in 0 deg and 30 deg frontal impacts and used to establish the design stiffness of the Side Impactor's deformable face. Verification of Side Impactor stiffness was accomplished through load cell barrier testing and side impactor-to-car testing, using two prototype side impact dummies. Data obtained from Side Impactor-to-car and car-to-car side impacts were used for comparative analyses, and it was concluded that the Side Impactor reasonably duplicated the target vehicle damage and dummy response in reference car-to-car impacts.
