CITEZENS' BAND RADIO - JUDGEMENT OF PRESENT AND FUTURE POTENTIAL. PROPOSALS FOR ACTIONS

PRIVATRADIO I VAEGTRAFIKEN. BEHOVSKARTLAEGGNING OCH FOERSLAG TILL AATGAERDER

The Swedish and international development and use of citizens' band radio (CB) are described. Technical problem are discussed and proposals for actions put forward. A problem analysis suggests that there are possibilities of making the CB-activity more efficient. A field study including an inquiry investigation was carried out in a western county in Sweden during the winter period 1983-1984. The purpose was to test some proposals brought forward in the analysis and to create a basis for a judgement of the present and future potential of CB. The study comprised registration and gathering of data on incidents in road traffic during three months. The data covered frequencies and types of incidents, when they occured and how and when aid services were called. All police forces in the county, the road authorities, thee county alarm centre and the CB monitoring base stations were involved in this aspect. An automatic remote station was developed and strategically located in the northern part of the study area. It was directly connected to the county alarm centre. A questionnaire was delivered to a random sample of CB-license holders and to a small number of professional truck drivers regularly passing the county. (TRRL)
