GEOTECHNICAL PROPERTIES AND BEHAVIOR OF CALCRETES IN SOUTH AND SOUTH WEST AFRICA

This paper reviews the geotechnical properties and behaviour of calcretes (caliches) in South and South West Africa. Calcretes range in properties from those of loose soils to hard rock. Their unusual composition and origin convey upon them unusual geotechnical properties, limiting the applicability of some current ASTM and other description, classification, and test methods and specifications for bases, subbases, and surface courses.
