THE USE AND NON USE OF THE PRIVATE CAR
HET GEBRUIK VAN DE THUISBLIJVENDE AUTO
In many households there are several driving licences and only one car. In such cases it is possible that a number of members of the household will compete with each other for the use of the car. This is known as car-competition. In this report the car-competition between working and non-working members of the household is studied. The main purpose of the study was to estimate the side-effects of a possible decrease in use of the car for the journey to work. Side-effects could be journeys of the non-workers with the car, which was then free to be used, and also the consequences for a second car. Auto-competition promotes the use of other modes of transport. A decrease in the use of the car for commuting in favour of other transport modes will have the effect that the car will be used by other members of the household, but only for about ten per cent of the distance which would otherwise have been driven in the journey to work.
