ANALYSIS OF THE TRAFFIC SAFETY IMPACT OF EDUCATION PROGRAMS FOR FIRST OFFENSE DRUNK DRIVERS 1980 ANNUAL REPORT: VOLUME IV

This volume of the 1980 Annual Report presents an interim analysis concerning the effectiveness of the CDUI Project's education programs for drivers convicted of their first drunk driving offense. First offense drunk drivers were randomly assigned to a home study program, an in-class education program, or a no treatment control group. Within each of these conditions one-half of the clients were also assigned to quarterly letter monitoring, and one-half to follow-up interviews: two secondary interventions. Clients in each treatment condition were compared in terms of drunk driving offenses (DUI) and accident involvement occurring subsequent to assignment. The results indicated that both the education programs resulted in a significant reduction in DUI recidivism relative to the control group but there was no significant difference between the home study and in-class approaches. The education programs had no significant effect on accident involvement. Neither of the secondary interventions had a traffic safety impact.
