STUDIES IN DRIVERS' ROUTE CHOICE BEHAVIOUR

STUDIER AV BILSTERS VAEGVAL

THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY WAS TO INVESTIGATE HOW DIFFERENT FACTORS INFLUENCE DRIVERS' ROUTE SELECTION AND TO EXAMINE THE APPLICABILITY OF DIFFERENT TRAFFIC ASSIGNMENT MODELS TO URBAN TRAFFIC. THE SCOPE OF THE STUDY IS LIMITED TO HOME-TO- WORK TRIPS. DATA FROM TWO INVESTIGATIONS ON DRIVERS' CHOICE BETWEEN ALTERNATE CONNECTIONS ACROSS THE RIVER GOETAAELV, TRAVELLING TO AND FROM WORK IN GOETEBORG 1967 AND 1969 WERE ANALYZED IN THIS STUDY. A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT MATHEMATICAL ASSIGNMENT MODELS WERE EVALUATED BY REGRESSION ANALYSIS. THE NUMBER OF DRIVERS CHOOSING A CERTAIN ROUTE IS EXPRESSED AS FUNCTIONS OF EITHER RATIO OR DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A COMBINATION OF TRAVEL TIME AND DISTANCE FOR THE DIFFERENT ALTERNATIVES. THE RESULTS OF THE INVESTIGATION INDICATE THAT THE TRADITIONAL RESISTANCE RATIO METHOD SHOULD BE USED IN PREFERENCE TO THE DIFFERENCE MODELS WHILE FURTHER RESEARCH ON THE INFLUENCE OF TRIP LENGTH ON ROUTE CHOICE IS AWAITED. /TRRL/
