FAULT DIAGNOSIS FOR ROAD PAVEMENTS
Two fundamental approaches to fault diagnosis of pavements are identified, namely the pathological approach which essentially is used to determine the type and extent of remedial works necessary at a particular site where faults are known to exist and the diagnostic approach which is applied to a network of roads in order to determine the relative maintenance condition of each section of the network and particularly to locate those lengths requiring more detailed investigation and/or remedial works. In the past the pathological approach has been principally used but increasingly in future it is considered that the main thrust of fault diagnosis for pavements will utilise the diagnostic approach. Examples are given of the various ways in which the surveys can be used and development work which is necessary in order that the full potential of the diagnostic approach can be utilised.
