AUTOMATIC TRAFFIC COUNTING PRACTICE
This paper examines the evolution of the automatic recording and detection techniques currently used, with an evaluation of their appropriateness to differing situations. Particular emphasis is placed on the pneumatic tube as a detector for temporary sites and on inductive loops for more permanent situations. The treatment of recording techniques covers the range from simple recorders, based on directly read electromechanical counters, to the most modern, intelligent, time-based recorders which store the data in microchip memories and use microcomputers for their processing.
