PAVEMENT SERVICEABILITY
The road user regards the efficiency (or serviceability) of the road network in terms of costs (direct costs through fuel, wear and tear, and indirect costs through taxation), delay, comfort and safety. The engineer also has to quantify these criteria in addition to predicting the future pavement life, while dealing with financial limits in the planning of new and remedial works. In this paper the authors seek to identify the factors which are generally considered to be significant in the assessment of pavement serviceability and describe briefly the means available to evaluate performance. Recent developments in UK equipment are referred to and consideration is given to devices developed outside the UK. The advantages and disadvantages of machine-based systems versus manual assessment methods are discussed. For the covering abstract of the symposium see TRIS 396069. (TRRL)
