HIGHWAY SNOW AND ICE CONTROL. STATE-OF-THE-ART REPORT
HALKBEKAEMPNINGSMETODER. KUNSKAPSLAEGE OCH AKTUELL FORSKNING
Deicing of roads carrying the greatest part of traffic in Sweden and abroad is to a large extent done chemically. Salting with NaCl is an effective method at a relatively low cost. On the less used roads mechanical deicing techniques, such as ploughing and sanding, are mostly used. The chemical and mechanical deicing techniques are described as well as methods to reduce the usage of salt. Chemical alternatives to salt have been tested for several years, but no realistic replacement has yet been found. The most promising alternative is calcium-magnesium-acetate (CMA) which has been tested in the USA during the last few years and is now tested at the Swedish Road and Traffic Research Institute. Also "passive" methods to prevent icing are described, such as design of wearing courses less susceptible to icing. (TRRL)
